How to declutter your car for good

Drivers have been told of simple tips to remove unsightly messes from cars for a clean, uncluttered start to the new year.

Car care experts from LiquidTech have revealed eight simple steps for ridding cars of clutter and getting organised so interiors stay clean and tidy.

Door compartments, glove boxes, cup holders and seat pockets often become overrun with food wrappers, papers and general clutter.

Some tips include using the 20/20 rule when removing clutter to ensure cars are properly cleared of loose items taking up space.

Using a car bin can ensure rubbish doesn’t build up over time and setting up a routine to remove debris and wipe down surfaces can keep vehicles decluttered for good.

A car cleaning expert from LiquidTech said: “Car clutter can accumulate quickly as we go about our busy lives but by following our eight steps, drivers can transform their vehicle from a pigsty to pristine perfection.

“Not only is car clutter unsightly but it's also unhygienic because it can accumulate dust, food debris, and other particles that provide a breeding ground for bacteria and germs.

“Loose items can also be distracting and dangerous, obstructing views and interfering with access to important controls like the brake pedal.

“January is the ideal time to give your car a spruce up, clearing out rubbish, cleaning surfaces and planning for an uncluttered car for the year ahead.”

Eight tips for decluttering your car for good:

  1. Clear out the car

The first thing you need to do is empty the car of all loose items focusing on areas where clutter accumulates in door pockets, storage compartments, glove boxes and cup holders. Organise items into piles of rubbish to be thrown away, things you want to keep in the house and things to go back into the car once it is clean.

  1. Use the 20/20 rule

Get rid of items you can easily replace for less than £20 in less than 20 minutes. This will help ensure you don’t keep items you may or may not need at some point in the future as they can be cheaply and easily replaced.

  1. Clean surfaces

Now your car is clear you can get at all the surfaces that had been previously covered up. Use a good multi-purpose cleaner and a soft cloth to clean the dashboard, armrests and steering wheel.

  1. Smarten up mats and upholstery

Remove the floor mats, shake off any debris and vacuum them outside the vehicle before cleaning the carpets inside. A small hand vacuum will help you get into all the nooks and crannies. Use an upholstery and carpet cleaner to give your car interior a proper spruce up.

  1. Assign storage spots

Now your car interior is clutter-free and clean, it's time to decide where to put the things you want to keep so they don’t get in the way yet are easily accessible. Having a place for everything and putting it back in its place once you’ve used it will help keep your car clutter-free for good.

  1. Organise your glove box and boot

Between school runs, the commute to work and family away days it's easy to shove things into out-of-sight storage spaces such as the boot and glove box. Clear out the glove box of everything apart from important vehicle documents, a notepad and a pen and leave the boot clear for when you actually need to fit something in there.

  1. Use a car bin

A car bin can be a good way to keep a car free of rubbish by providing a designated place to dispose of small trash items such as food wrappers and cups. If you don’t like the idea of using a bin, get into the habit of clearing your car of refuse each time you arrive home so it stays clean and organised.

  1. Clean regularly

Set aside a few minutes each week to remove any unnecessary items and consider keeping an all-purpose cleaner and cloth in the boot making it easier to wipe down the surfaces each time you declutter.
